INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENT 1
ASSIGNMENT 1 – Individual Written Essay (30%)
General Instructions:
Please note that the chosen topic for Assignment 1 will also be the topic for your Group Presentation
(Assignment 2).
While writing your structured essay, you should incorporate relevant theories and concepts to justify your
arguments. To begin with, it is recommended your group undertake a scoping exercise to narrow the
broad topic you have been allocated, and identify your focus which would form the gist of the group
presentation (Assignment 2). After the scoping exercise, individually develop a structure for the written
structured essay (broad outlines provided for each group as guideline above). Students should not try to
cover everything, but rather refine the topic selection and justify the scope. Once this has been done,
students should develop the theoretical basis for their argument, apply it to a specific example, and
analyze it drawing out business implications. The purpose of this structured essay is to demonstrate your
ability to apply a theoretical understanding to practical contexts, and identify relevant issues for
organizations operating in the global business environment. Whilst writing the structured essay, use
current examples to illustrate your arguments.
Remember to acknowledge your sources throughout the paper using the Swinburne Harvard
referencing system. The structured essay is to be typed and 1.5 spaced (a standard 12-point font should
be used). It should be checked for spelling, consistency and clarity of expression.
Your structured essay should incorporate at least 8 different references from at least
3 different sources. These can be sourced from the following:
• Academic articles
• Relevant textbooks
• Periodicals
• Newspapers
• Relevant online sources
If students fail to utilise references properly throughout their entire structured essay they will
subsequently receive lesser marks for their structured essay (please see Assignment 1 – Marking
Rubric for more details). It is not sufficient to only include a reference list at the end of your
structured essay.

For an example of the Harvard referencing system refer to Chapter 2of
‘Communication skills handbook: how to succeed in written and oral communication’
(2006) 2nd ed, by Jane Summers and Brett Smith.

For an example of the process of structured essay writing refer to Chapter 3 of
