A Study investigating the usage of social media and its psychological

Participant Information and Consent Form
Information about this study
Hello, my name is Sneaha Liz Philip and I am conducting this study as part of Master’s research training in
psychology. The aim of this research is to find out the usage of social media and its psychological effects
during the lockdown period of the university student. During this pandemic time, it was found that the usage
of social media was in a peak level. That means, it was increased when compared to the pre – pandemic era.
This rise was found to be more during the lockdown periods. Those lockdown period has eventually made
everyone especially the university students to be more active in their social media platforms. The Social
media in a way helped people to get connected with others and in a sense, it helped to maintain a good level
of their mental health during the pandemic. Though there are many positives or benefits of these (social
media), it has also brought negative impact too. When stating the negative ones, it has developed an immense
control over one’s life such as it has brought a type of addiction among people especially the university
students; Along with that this can be a prediction for the future too; that if this kind of usage is continued it
can even decrease direct interactions, socializing can even be lasting only in the level of social media and
many other aftereffects such as deuteriation of mental health also can happen. So, by conducting this study,
I hope that the young community can realize and understand their social media usage and therefore have a
control on them rather than the social medias controlling the ‘young minds’. This study is expected to bring
insights on the social media usage among university students. So, as part of this you are being asked to take
part in an interview that will last for approximately an hour. The interviewer will ask a series of questions
about the usage of social media during the lockdown period; specifically the time spent, the social media
used the most, the effect of the usage the participant thinks whether it was positive or negative etc.
Although the interview will be conducted online via video conferencing software, the interview will only be
audio recorded with your permission and then transcribed. Contact details of support and information
websites will be made available to you after the interview should any of the issues raised during the interview
later prove to be upsetting to you. During the interview, please let the interviewer know if you would rather
not answer some of the questions you are asked. Due to the nature of this kind of research, extracts from the
interview will be used in the final report. To protect your anonymity your name will be changed and you will
be asked to provide a pseudonym under which your data will be stored. Only the interviewer, the module
tutors, and those marking this report will have access to this data. All recordings will be destroyed after the
written report is submitted for marking.
