ABSTRACT
It is understood that the principle of cohesion within a team has a detrimental effect on performance in elite sport, however the literature surrounding the effects of cohesion in recreational sports teams is scarce. It is widely understood that sport and recreation positively contribute to the factors which build social cohesion, yet there is no research on how the perceived level of cohesion impacts upon performance.  
The aim of this research article is to assess the importance of social cohesion within recreational rugby teams, and how cohesion impacts upon performance.  
This research article was a questionnaire-based project which was given to recreational rugby teams in England. Due to the restraints of the coronavirus pandemic, the questionnaire was distributed online – mainly through rugby club’s social media pages. ___ responses were collected from ____ teams, and after the exclusion criteria was applied, ___ were utilised within the study. 
The amount of leaders within a team was linked to the perceived level of social cohesion, which again linked to the performance of the team. Teams which were perceived to have more leaders were seen to be more successful – with players citing that better team cohesion lead to better performance. 
In conclusion, the study has provided new information which outlines that social cohesion has a positive impact in recreational rugby, and that teams that had better cohesion were more likely to be successful/promoted as opposed to teams which had poor cohesion and were more likely to have poor performance/be relegated. The number of perceived leaders within the team directly correlated to the performance – with more leaders in a team seen to be more successful. The information provided could be used as a diagnostic and improvement tool, enabling teams to improve performance by investigating their own cohesion. Future studies built on the basis of the results of this study could be used to improve team dynamic and cohesion in recreational and non-elite team sport. The themes of better social cohesion positively impacting the performance of a recreational team was not dissimilar to studies which were undertaken regarding elite sport.
