Case Study One – Charlie
Charlie is a 65yr old Aboriginal man with ‘trust issues’, who has experienced long-term mental illness, such as depression and anxiety. Charlie is currently living in specialised supported residential accommodation for Indigenous people with mental health needs after being homeless for many years. The accommodation is designed to support the residents to achieve mental wellness and encourage them to get back in touch with their Aboriginal/Indigenous roots. Charlies’ health has improved, and he is more relaxed.
John (who is also of Aboriginal descent) is Charlie’s mental health support worker and Charlie has recently disclosed that one of the support workers in his residential accommodation has inappropriately ‘touched’ him. Charlie has also asked John not to tell anyone because he is afraid of becoming homeless again.
John tells Charlie that although there are no legal requirements mandating him to report, he is still bound by ‘Duty of Care’ to all clients, therefore he will have to report this abuse to his supervisor. John advises that he support Charlie through all steps of the process in order to help him feel safe.
